Compassionate Communication (NVC) Practice Groups

Participating in a Practice Group is a great way to continue learning about Compassionate Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with like-minded people. Practice groups usually consist of 8-10 people and meet on a regular basis (3-4 times per month).

Typically, the group studies Marshall Rosenberg's, "Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life", together with Lucy Leu's companion workbook. The group typically reviews one chapter during each session.

New Practice Groups

We form new practice groups approximately three times per year:

Each member is asked to own, or have access to, two resource books:
• "Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life" by Marshall Rosenberg; and
• "Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook" by Lucy Leu.

In case you would like to purchase a copy, we'll have copies available for sale at the first three meetings.

We anticipate 16 sessions to complete the initial Practice Group cycle to be organized as follows:

  • Sessions 1-3:  connection, empathy and orientation
  • Sessions 4-16:  NVC practice and learning (using Marshall's book + workbook from Lucy Leu)

The first three meetings are designed for bonding and community-building, after which the group will become closed to new members and will meet 3-4 times per month depending on the members' preferences.

We provide two experienced facilitators from the community to lead the group, and they gradually support group members in taking leadership and eventually shift into the role of consultants for the group.

For our own support and sustainability, we request that group members contribute what amounts to $5-8 per session (for the first 16 sessions) in an initial payment of $75-125 per person [this includes free copies of both books listed above, a value of $38.00].

We offer a sliding fee scale in order to make the groups accessible to as many people as possible, and when choosing what to contribute we invite you to consider your own financial means, the value you have received from NVC, and the joy of giving.  An average of $100 per person keeps us sustainable, and enables us to continue organizing groups in the future.

If your personal financial circumstances prevent you from contributing in this range, please see our Financial Assistance Policy.
